The Struggle is Real - Overcoming Talent Shortages & Skills Gaps

makenatechsolution

Not sure about you, but for me, the past couple of years have been tough.  We have been struggling to find the right talent, and workers are navigating shifting job requirements and evolving industries. As we move forward, there’s hope on the horizon, but it requires a new mindset and creative solutions to bridge the talent gaps.

Why Has It Been So Hard to Find the Right Talent?

Some industries, like tech, healthcare, and engineering, have been hit especially hard by talent shortages. Demand for roles like software developers, cybersecurity experts, and skilled tradespeople continues to outpace supply. Employers are finding themselves in an endless game of catch-up, trying to attract and retain skilled workers while facing fierce competition.

Where’s the Hope?

The good news is that companies and job seekers alike are learning to adapt. Instead of waiting for the "perfect" candidate, businesses are rethinking how they hire and who they consider for open roles. Here’s what’s working:

Upskilling & Reskilling: A Game-Changer

Rather than chasing an ever-shrinking talent pool, many companies are investing in their current workforce (finally!) by providing upskilling and reskilling opportunities. This means that if you’re a job seeker, you don’t have to have every skill on day one—showing a willingness to learn and grow can be just as valuable.

How This is Playing Out:

  • Companies are partnering with online learning platforms and universities to help employees develop new skills.

  • Internal training programs and job rotation initiatives are giving workers opportunities to expand their expertise.

  • Employers are realizing that hiring for potential is just as important as hiring for experience.

Alternative Talent Pools: Broadening the Search

The definition of a "qualified candidate" is evolving. Companies are tapping into non-traditional talent sources, including:

  • Career changers looking to break into new fields (this is still a tough one in SO many industries still)

  • Freelancers and contract workers who bring niche skills for specific projects.

  • Returning workforce members, such as parents re-entering the job market or retirees who still want to contribute.

  • Remote workers, giving companies access to a global talent pool rather than limiting themselves to one geographic area.

Getting Creative: Sourcing Talent in New Ways

Finding the right people requires thinking outside the box. The most successful businesses aren’t just posting job ads and waiting—they’re actively engaging with potential candidates in fresh and innovative ways.

What’s Working?

  • AI-powered recruitment tools are helping companies identify candidates who might have been overlooked by traditional screening methods.

  • Social media recruiting is connecting employers with passive candidates who may not be actively looking but are open to opportunities. (This is a huge one we’ve found great success with …Back in 2022 I kind of lured a passive resource from JPL and placed him with another aerospace company…that might have been my shining moment for the year 😊).

  • Networking and community engagement through industry events, webinars, and online forums help businesses build relationships with potential hires before they even apply.

Looking Ahead: A Path Forward

The hiring landscape is changing, but there’s reason to be hopeful. Companies that embrace flexibility, invest in their workforce, and explore new hiring strategies will come out ahead. Likewise, job seekers who take charge of their learning, stay open to new opportunities, and leverage non-traditional pathways can find exciting new career prospects.

It’s been a challenging few years, but change brings opportunity. Whether you’re hiring or looking for a job, the key is to stay adaptable, stay open, and keep moving forward.
